Some inspiring stuff

Pro skier Josh Dueck became paralyzed from the waist down after a back flip gone wrong, yet he still continues to charge it on a sit ski. Watch this clip of him as he attempts to get back at it flip again- it's pretty inspiring.

Props to the awesome Powder Mountain for helping this happen!

A little taste of the Supernatural

A teaser trailer for the Supernatural comp has been released, looks pretty gnarly!

The biggest "Super" thing happening this weekend

...and it's not the Superbowl! Bits and pieces have been flying around about the Red Bull Supernatural comp for a few months now, but this weekend it will all come to fruition. The Supernatural kicked off it's inaugural year at Baldface in British Columbia yesterday. Travis Rice began putting plans in motion after the Natural Selection comp held in Jackson four years back. The idea was to bring all the riders focused on backcountry filming and the young contest jibbers for a competition that brought both elements together.

After scouting locations from some time,  Rice and his crew chose the "Scary Cherry" face at Baldface knowing the elevation and northeastern facing aspect of the slope would allow the course to survive some warm spells or a week or two with no snow. The course was hand cut by Rice and a group of lumberjacks over the summer to have nearly 100 custom features from pillow lines and transfers to log ladders hung 30 feet in the trees. The slope starts at a steep 45 degree pitch slowly leveling out to 30 degrees further down with a massive kicker to powder midway. The whole run is almost a mile long.

Riders were not allowed any practice runs on the course and the starting order was determined by the ultimate woodsman contest Friday: made up of an ax throw, timed nail pound, and timed beacon search. The winner was allowed to call his drop-in position followed by the other riders in order with Lucas Debari taking that honor.

Saturday’s start order list is: 1. Scotty Lago 2. DCP 3. John Jackson 4. Lucas Debari 5. Terje 6. Mark Sollors 7. Nicolas Müller 8. Mark McMorris 9. Eero Niemala 10. Gigi Rüf 11. Mark Carter 12. Mark Landvik 13. Travis Rice 14. Sage Kotsenburg 15. Eric Jackson 16. Devun Walsh 17. Jake Blauvelt 18. Kazu Kokubo

Unsurprisingly, Travis took first place followed by backcountry big-hitters Gigi Ruf and Nicolas Muller. You can read all about their ridiculous runs here or you can wait to till March 31st to watch the whole thing go down on NBC.

...aaaand I'm back!

While I had an amazing time in Colorado, a lot has happened since my last post! For those of you who weren't watching the craziness go down at the X Games last weekend there were some pretty epic moments. Vail was surprisingly quiet, most likely due to the higher traffic in Aspen to watch the games. We were very lucky to arrive shortly after Vail received over a foot of snow, and the second day of my trip it snowed another 8 or so inches which meant they were finally able to open all of the bowls. We were able to find some good powder stashes, yet in some areas the limited coverage was more obvious with an unusual amount of exposed rocks and stumps.

Stuck in powder
It was also frightening to hear about the high number of avalanches that have occurred recently due to the extremely unstable snow pack. Sadly one young boy was even killed in bounds the week before our arrival and many of the woods areas were closed off due to high avalanche risk. Despite this, we enjoyed the areas of fresh snow we could find and made a point to keep a closer eye on each other. The trip was a success but coming home to a bare east coast was rather depressing. Friends here reported warm, rainy weather and a few local mountains even closed for a day to save snow.

With all the money spent on snow making this season and the overall lack of business this will be a tough year on the books for a lot of mountains. Killington is hopeful that the after effects of the Dew Tour a few weeks ago will see increased turnouts to the host mountain from those who want to ride the same terrain as the pros. They also believe that the national coverage will help show those still suffering from backyard syndrome that there is actually a good amount of snow at the mountains, even if it's not in their yard. After the awful effects of Irene on the area, the town of Killington really needs the business: check out this Transworld Business article to learn more.

Why so afraid little buddy?
Although Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday, I'm doubtful many of the mountains around here will even make it another 6 weeks. I still maintain some hope that we will get a late-season dumping as we have in years past. Last year I was riding at Sugarloaf on May 8th and though I'm skeptical that I'll be able to stretch my season as long this year I still look forward to spring riding in a t-shirt and 60 degree weather. I would simply prefer that wasn't already happening in February!

Colorado

I am currently in Colorado enjoying the Sun and Snow (even if there is less than last year) so far it has been awesome and completely enjoyable. Hopefully conditions back east aren't deteriorating too much. I heard we even got a bit of snow, which is much needed after Tuesday was exceptionally warm again- 50+ degrees in mid January is just not cool... However while I'm having an awesome time here I will not be posting as much, there's just too much for me to do here!I hope you will understand:

In the meantime, I suggest everyone watch the X-Games which are taking place in Aspen this year and started today. Tomorrow will be the men and women's slopestyle, the snowboard Big Air Final and the women's SuperPipe Final- definitely all worth checking out. The events are viewable on ESPN or Espn.com A lot of awesome athletes like: Scotty Lago, Louie Vito, Kazuhiro Kokubo, IPod, Danny Davis, the Mitranis, Kelly Clark, Gretchen Bleiler, Hannah Teter, Torah Bright, Torstein Horgmo, Mikkel Bang, Seb Touts, Halldor Helgason and many many more.

ps. Two more days to vote in Real Snow!

Dew Tour Day 4

Sunday, January 22, 2012

Festival Village open from 9:30 a.m.-3:45 p.m.

Men's & Women's Ski Slopestyle Practice 8:00-9:45 a.m.
Women's Ski Slopestyle Final 10:00-10:45 a.m.
Men's Ski Slopestyle Final 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Men's Snowboard Superpipe Practice 12:30-3:15 p.m.
Men's Snowboard Superpipe Final 3:30-5:00 p.m.

Yesterday saw the finals of the slopestyle event. The snow was coming down pretty heavily coating features. The riders still charged the course, but some were thrown off the slick conditions and suffered lower scores for it. Slopestyle veterans Chas Guldemond and Mark McMorris sent less than stellar runs and getting enough speed was clearly an issue for many of the riders.

Seb Touts commented: "It was tough conditions today since it was snowing and the speed was really bad. The first run I put down wasn’t a perfect run, but at least I got an 85.50 to help me hold onto second place. I missed my second rail on the second run, but it’s all good because with two second places I’m first on the overall Dew Tour.” (Allisports.com) Seb scored second yesterday and Justin Morgan scored third with an 80.25.

Eric Willett took first again, stomping the competition and the course at Killington. Willett Scored a 91 with a front 270 on the down rail, gap front lip 270 out on the gap down, front board switchout on the cannon into a a switch back 10 double, cab 9 double, and finishing out on a front 10 double on the three jumps.

Today is the last day of the Dew Tour at Killington and the much awaited Snowboard Superpipe Final. Big hitters like Jack and Luke Mitrani, Scott Lago, Louie Vito, Danny Davis and I Pod will be coming out and will no doubt be busting out some huge air and big spins. We'll see if Matt Ladley will continue to dominate the pipe like he has the past few days, it's definitely going to be some great competition! If you can't be there in person watch it live on NBC.

Check out a few of the highlights from day 2:

Day 3 is all about the Snowboard Slopestyle finals. The riders have been pulling out all the stops to throw down some really gnarly tricks on this massive course and it's all leading up to today. The current top 5 on tour are: Gjermund Braaten, Sebastien Toutant, Charles Reid, Chas Guldemond, and Mikkel Bang. Only 9 out of 32 riders will advance from yesterday's semi-finals to today's finals with Eric Willett taking that top spot.

Mens Ski Superpipe Semi-final 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Winter Dew Tour VIP Party featuring RAC DJ at the Wobbly Barn 9:00-11:00 p.m.

Results are in from yesterday's Snowboard Last Chance Qualifiers for Superpipe and Slopestyle. Ville Uotila took the top spot in slopestyle with a run of a 270 front boardslide into a backside lip and 50-50 backside 180, followed by a cab 720, switch backside 900, capped with a frontside 1080. To put it in perspective watch the following run through of the course, pretty sick.

In the Superpiper LCQ's Tore Holvick took first throwing down a backside air into frontside 1080 and cab 720, then a frontside 900 followed by a backside rodeo. Amazing to see the progression the sport has made over the years- watching these riders push the limits on every possible trick is inspiring. However, I'm disappointed that the Dew Tour has cut Women's Snowboarding from the Killington stop this year. They site lack of athlete turnout last year as the reason for the cut which is unfortunate because competitions like this are only going to grow the pool of high-caliber female athletes and raise the level of competition, both necessary things before we head to the Olympics in 2014.

RIP Sarah

DEW TOUR IS HERE!

Today marks the start of the second of three Dew Tour stops and it's being hosted from the 19th-22nd by Killington. The four day long event showcases some of the top athletes in the sport throwing down everything they've got in a massive 22-foot superpipe as well as a truly intimidating  slopestyle course. If you've never been to the Dew Tour it is one of the largest events in the East and is worth going just to experience the booths, parties and raucous crowds. There are lots of freebies given out by sponsors in the "Festival Village" and the weather the next few days could make for some fun riding in between viewing events.

Here is the schedule for today:

Shit Snowboarders Say

By now you've most likely seen "Shit Skiers Say" and we've all been wondering when someone would follow up with a "Shit Snowboarders Say". Now it's been delivered and it was even filmed at Mount Snow. Droooooppppp!

Holy Awesome!

If you guys haven't seen Scott Stevens part from CAPiTA's Defenders Of Awesome, well, you are about to have your mind blown. Scott (or "Atcha Boi")  is one of my favorite street style riders. He is extremely innovative and creative with his riding and tends to pull in a lot of style from his skateboarding background. He also happens to hail from Westfield, MA so he's repping New England (Awesomely!).

Also, please go vote for his X-Games video part ASAP: X-Games Real Snow
He's up against Halldor Helgason, who's also a great rider, but personally I think Scott is way more creative and deserves his recognition in this sport. Here's his X-Games spot:

Best places to ride MLK weekend

fresh tracks before work
After that little bit of snow we got we were all reminded that this is actually winter (I was starting to question that) and if you got the opportunity to ride yesterday you were also reminded that pow days are awesome. More please Mother Nature? If you didn't fake some mysterious 24 hour bug to play hooky Thursday you missed out on some fun times!

However, there's still some snow left to slash this weekend and even the possibility that some places will be getting a few more inches. Beware though: the forecast calls for dropping temps Saturday night into Sunday (high of 10?) so bundle up good! On the plus side this may keep some of the usual holiday crowds off the slope so you can get at that small bit of fresh left on the side of that one trail you like...

Best bets for this weekend:

While most mountains received 6-8 inches, Jay could be getting up to another 4 tonight. However the forecast also calls for winds up to 40mph and extremely cold temps. There's a good amount of terrain open and hopefully some of that snow will get pushed into the trees where you can avoid the gusts and ride some of the steep, tight lines Jay is famous for. Jay is also offering great lodging deals to celebrate the opening of their new indoor water park so even if conditions suck you can have fun surfing some artificial waves.

Wildcat powder (from @skiwildcat)
If you don't want to make the long haul up to Jay, Killington is a always a good bet for a busy holiday weekend. Although the mountain will undoubtedly attract a lot more vacationers, it has the terrain capacity to handle the rush without feeling too crowded and with 7 inches of new snow there's even the possibility you'll find some untouched stuff to make pretty lines in.

Wildcat in NH is reporting 9 inches of snow yesterday and from the looks of the pics they posted it seems like it was a blast. Not a ton of trails open but they will have less crowds than some of the bigger mountains. Nearby, Attitash also got a fair amount of snow and has more trails to offer too.

In Maine the Loaf is definitely the way to go. Report says 7 inches but by some accounts they got nearly a foot of snow, at the least 10 inches. Forecast is also saying 4-6 inches of additional accumulation possible tonight, but it will definitely be a cold one up there with a windchill as cold as -13.

Hopefully by now you've packed up your gear an you're getting ready to hop in your car to have an awesome weekend of riding! Stay warm and go get some pow, you deserve it.

Dude, wear a helmet.

Watching pro riders throw down ridiculous tricks like they're nothing is fun and awe inspiring. But what always baffles me is why none of these guys wear helmets!? I understand that many feel uncomfortable, they don't like the way they look or they just don't think they need it because they don't fall often. However, it's not just about them: what about about all the aspiring little shredders who are watching them, idolizing them and trying to do tricks just like them?

The last few seasons we have seen too many pro riders suffer traumatic brain injuries. Kevin Pearce is finally riding again after his 2009 head-to-half-pipe crash and I shudder to think where he'd be at if he weren't wearing a helmet that day.

Last January pro rider Danny Toumarkine also suffered a TBI after going off a jump wrong, he was not wearing a helmet. Danny was in an induced coma and had to have a piece of his skull stored in his stomach to relieve some of the swelling. After a long recovery period and intensive therapy he is now able to ride again.

Though it is inspiring to watch both of these videos and hear about their stellar recoveries, not everyone can be so lucky. Next week is National Ski and Safety Awareness Week and wearing a helmet should definitely be high on your personal safety awareness. If you don't have one yet, check with your local shop to see if they're offering any deals next week. In the meantime check out these sites:

Cross your fingers and do your best snow dance...

A little snow coming tonight into tomorrow. Expect anywhere from 2-12 inches depending where you're at. Boston metro will be on the slushier side but hopefully the temps will be cold enough to produce some drier snow for the mountains. Maine will get the brunt of the storm so Sunday River and the Loaf will get some much needed coverage and hopefully the "King of Spring" will be able to build up their base so they can make it till may again!

Here's a map of the expected accumulation over the next 48 hours:

I will be out first thing tomorrow (hopefully) taking some fresh tracks, stay tuned for updates on where the best conditions will be this weekend.

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Last week saw the first few inches of snow many mountains have had in weeks, only to be followed by exceedingly warm temperatures Saturday then back to lower temps Sunday. This meant riding in t-shirts on hero snow one day and boiler plate the next. Although it was enjoyable while it lasted, the warm temps make me concerned for the longevity of this season.

That's green grass behind me...
I took a look at the base depths of most of the mountains in New England, comparing last season's  depths as of January 8th, 2011 and January 8th, 2012 and was surprised by what I found: many are reporting similar, if not higher base depths than last season despite the overwhelming lack of natural snow.

While we may have been spoiled by the exceptional amount of fresh snow we had last year, the snowmaking teams of each of these mountains have been working double time to deal with this crazy weather and give us something we can put an edge in. This means operating costs are also higher than usual, yet fewer people are going to the mountains.

In past years "Backyard Syndrome" has been very helpful for the ski industry. The idea is that if people see snow around their homes they have a greater urge to go ski. However, this also works in reverse: if there's no snow on the ground here, fewer people will head to the slopes.

Christmas vacation week at Wachusett saw pretty dismal turnouts compared to last year- about a third of the customers daily. School vacations are typically some of the busiest days of the season and the numbers they bring are critical for having a profitable winter. Wawa wasn't the only mountain to suffer these reduced numbers either, the impact is nearly unanimous. Seems the only place really getting any snow can't even make good use of it: a small town in Alaska received nearly 18 feet in a recent storm and needed emergency relief to help get rid of it (click here for more details). If only they could send some of it our way!!

In the meantime, the mountains are trying their best to draw attention to their snowmaking capabilities and any other activities they might offer as a way to entice customers. Many are offering discounts and promotions to lure people in, so if you just want to get out a ride and don't care if it came from a gun or the sky you're in luck because they really want your business. Remember: Occupy Chairlifts!

Contest season begins! Transworld TransAM Comp

Stop 1 of the Transworld TransAM comp is tomorrow, Saturday January 7th, at Waterville Valley. Last year brought out some sick amateur riders so it's worth checking out just to watch what crazy moves they might throw down. Plus when they get famous you can brag to all your friends about how you saw them compete "back in the day" before they became the next Shaun White. Peep this video of last years comp:

Kids will flip over anything! The top 3 boys and girls will go on to the finals at Bear Mountain and qualifiers there will then be entered in the Ride Shakedown finals at Snoqualmie.

Ladies: Take lessons tailored for you

Shredding Jay with the girls
To my fellow lady shredders: If you're like me you've realized that it's sometimes hard to find other women who can rip down the mountain and it's nice to have some chicks who can keep up or even push your riding further. There's a reason why there are womens' specific boards, boots, bindings, etc.- women ride differently than men. We also learn differently than men. Women are usually more social and perform well in cooperative learning situations.  All of these are good reasons why women's specific lessons or clinics are a great idea.  Take a look at some of these programs going on within the next few months:

Sugarloaf Women's Programs
2 day Women's Turn Clinics offered Jan 22-23 and Mar 4-5. Includes 5 hours of riding, video analysis and equipment demos.

Killington Women's Weekend Program
2 day program offered Jan 14-15 and Mar 17-18. Includes 2 day ticket and 4.5 hours daily coaching.

Mount Snow Girls Day Out
Freestyle focused day of riding and coaching Mar 10. GDO has their own private park set up for the day and lunch is included.

Okemo Women's Alpine Adventures
2, 3 or 5 day including tickets, breakfast and lunch, coaching and video analysis. Check the site for dates.

Stratton Women's Workshops
Workshop includes 2 on snow sessions per day, breakfast and lunch daily and one group dinner. 2 or 3 day programs available. Check site for dates.

Loon Droppin' In Camps
Another park-intensive camp, this 2 day program runs Mar 24-25 and also has guest coaching from pro riders Channelle Sladics and Marie-France Roy.

All of these programs encourage camaraderie, supportive, comfortable and fun learning environments with no pressure. Take some time to ride with some like-minded women and get some coaching from chicks who can relate to your personal needs. I'm hoping to get to at least one of these clinics this season and hopefully someday I'll be able to shred like this lady:

Hidden gems of New England

When your go-to mountains become overrun with college kids home on break and elementary school groups it might be time to check out some of these lesser known mountains. Many have a lot better prices than the big guys (Ktown is charging $86!) and fewer crowds means the trails will be less scraped-off... maybe you'll even find some sweet untouched snow stashes!

Bromley
Peru, Vt
Ever been riding gondola at Stratton bemoaning the flat light and icy conditions, looked out and saw a peak bathed in sunlight not too far away? Often over shadowed by the better-known resort, Bromley should not be overlooked. The mountain boasts 43 trails winding through 163 acres of state and national forest with glade runs and park features all serviced by ten lifts. The south-facing slopes get lots of sun and tickets are $65, $57 on Sundays as compared to $87 at Stratton.

Burke Mountain
East Burke, VT
Over 100 acres of glades and 50 New England-style tight and windy trails, just the way they should be. One of the coolest things about this mountain is that it naturally separates out the different levels: the bottom half of the mountain is green trails only, while the top half has a nice mix of blues, blacks and double blacks. This keeps the noobs in their own area and not side-slip scraping all the snow off your favorite trails. They also get an average annual snowfall of 200 inches, while they may fall a little short this year they did get 4 inches in the last 72 hours which is better than a lot of places around here.

Magic Mountain
Londonderry, VT
If you're into those New England style trails, natural bumps and cheap ticket prices this is definitely the place for you. Magic doesn't have a ton of trails- that's not what it's know for. This is the mountain you come to if you love powder stashed trees, bombing cliff drops, natural freestyle features and plenty of off-piste goodness. It had some of the most challenging terrain around and is low cost to boot: only open Fri-Monday and powder days (6" or more) peak ticket prices top out at $59.

Saddleback Mountain
Rangeley, ME
Awesome summit views of the beautiful Rangeley lakes are just an added bonus of checking out Saddleback. It's also one of the few mountains in New England to offer above tree-level riding, boasting some sweet snowfields only a short hike up from the summit lift. In addition to having some nice steep headwalls to drop down, they also recently expanded to include the stellar 44 acre Casablanca glade: only the first part of an on-going glade expansion that will be progressing in the next few years. Peak tickets are a mere $59.

Black Mountain
Jackson, NH
This is another old school mountain with tight trails, a few steeps,  and fun glades. It definitely doesn't have that posh resort feel of some of the other mountains in the area, all the chairs are fixies and the largest is a 3-seater. What it lacks in amenities it makes up for in charm, no lift lines, and cheap tickets: peak price of a whopping $45. It also happens to be the oldest ski mountain in NH.

Ps. Don't hate me for including your "secret spot", just trying to help out my fellow riders.

January is learn to Ski and Snowboard Month!

Happy New Year everyone! Welcome to 2012 and the possible end of the world? I'm starting to think all the hype might be a little more valid as I look out my window at a snow-free and fairly warm January 1st. I can't remember the last time (if ever in my lifetime) there wasn't a single speck of the white stuff on the ground at this point in the season. Conditions at Wachusett yesterday were warm with the soft, wet snow I've grown to associate with spring riding. However, I remain optimistic that when it does come it will dump and we will have glorious heaps of powder like last year.
More please!

Although I am doubtful I will beat my past record of 87 days on snow, I still try to set goals for every season to improve my riding. In years past these have been things like improving my switch riding or learning how to do 360s. I find that giving myself something to strive for each season keeps me more engaged in my riding and on the days where conditions aren't stellar for cruising I can focus on trying to take little steps to get closer to my goal.

As an instructor it is a lot easier for me to acknowledge and be aware of my own weaknesses in my riding- I am trained to do movement analysis on my students so I can give feedback and help them improve. At the same time, I often struggle with knowing how to fix innate issues with my riding and it really helps to have an outsiders opinion. I love that I have easy access to my fellow instructors' assistance and try to take advantage of this to improve my personal riding as much as possible. It's amazing to me how much better my riding has become since I started teaching!
